There is no doubt that adding new product lines to your marketing can increase your sales revenue.

New FTC Regulations on Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recently released new guidelines concerning paid sponsorships, product reviews, recommendations and blogging. You can view the document here and I suggest you read it as its is important to know what you should and should not be doing as an affiliate or merchant.

There has been a considerable amount of discussion about this new document and what effect it will have on affiliate marketing. The following is some of the more interesting and useful blog posts about the subject:

New Advertising Guidelines from the FTC from Performance Marketing Alliance which is the main industry association for affiliates.

I see from the comments to these blogs there is alot of confusion about the topic. Here are my views on the subject that may or may not help.

1. This is only applicable to USA. If you live outside the USA then FTC has no jurisdiction over you. However your own country probably already has rules regarding this issue and may in fact be more restrictive than what this new guideline says anyway. I think its generally good practice to ensure you follow the rules of major developed countries such as USA, UK, Australia, Canada.

2. Dont lie or deceive. If you knowingly make false statements or deceive people then then you deserve to be punished. I have always thought it was illegal to make false statements in your advertising.

3. Disclaimers. It is probably wise to have a look at your disclaimer on your web sites and make sure they comply with the new guidelines. You may need to state that you may earn a commission from any sales resulting from links on your site. You may also need to disclose if you received advertising payments or any other benefits from sites that you mention or link to.

Increased conversions for increased profits

There is no doubt that the more efficient you can get a web site to convert a visitor to a buyer then the better off you will be. It also follows that increasing the value of each buyer will also increase your profit.

In fact getting the most profit possible from each and every visitor to your site should be top priority for every affiliate and merchant.

Getting visitor to a web site can be expensive and even the "free" traffic costs you time or money to set up so its worthwhile doing what you can to get the most value from each visitor.

New free keyword research tool

I just had to tell you about a brand new, free keyword research tool that Brad Callen just released.

It allows you to browse Google and view the Adwords keywords of ANY Adwords advertiser! Basically, it's a small file that gets installed into your web browser (i.e. Firefox).

When you do a Google search, the software automatically places a "view keywords" button below every single Adwords advertiser.

Click the "view keywords" button and really neat popup window appears that not only shows you the keywords that any Adwords advertiser is bidding on, but it also shows you a TON of other information, like how much they're paying per click and so on.

It's awesome.

Be prepared for hosting problems

Recently the web hosting company where I have several of my sites hosted. had a transformer explode on them and it could take days to get the power and all the servers back online.
Even though they had backup generators, multiple internet connections, fully secure datacentres and a gaurenteed uptime they could not prevent the problem or fix it in a hurry.
I have switched several sites over to a different hosting company for the short term while this issue is resolved. Its a timely reminder that it is wise to have at least 2 or 3 back up hosts in various worldwide locations ready to go at any time.
Here is a list of recommended hosts that I use:

This is mainly a good cheap domain registration service but they do offer good hosting with servers in India and USA. The advantage is that they offer a very low monthly rate of just 2.99 and even less if you join their reseller program. What I like is you can just order the specific services you need.

I met Colin McDougall at the recent Affiliate Summit and was impressed with his no nonsense style. He is not guru, just a guy that quietly goes about making a ton of money on the internet. He has opened the Fly on the Wall Club to help regular people learn how to really make money on the internet. There is lots of resources for members but I think the big one is that you get his private cell phone number and are encouraged to call him if you need any help, which is just the thing you would expect from a guy that just wants to help people and is not full of hype.

Back from TRAFFIC and Affiliate Summit conferences

The most surprising thing to me about these two conferences is that more people did not attend both. There was probably only about 5 people who attended both events. I would have thought that domain names and affiliate programs would go together very well as people use both to create online income and often some great results can be achieved by using good domain name and affiliate strategy together....maybe I am just ahead of time and others will catch on to this idea later.

The other thing I noticed is a big trend to video..not really a surprise, but worth noting. Affiliates can use video to monetize their sites and domainers were showing some big interest in .TV domain names for use in future video sites.

I picked up plenty of other ideas for getting traffic and making extra affiliate income so it was very worthwhile attending both events.

Competitor intelligence

I have just come back from the CAC in Macau where I had a great time and learnt alot about affiliate marketing in Asia. One of the things I like best about going to conferences is the people you meet as everyone has different ideas and different ways of doing things so you always learn something new.

The area of competitor intelligence tools is one area that has become popular this year and I see it becoming increasingly important for all professional online marketers. I met up with David from Syntrix at the conference and he arranged for me to take a tour of his service. I was very impressed by the quantity and quality of the data and its ease of use. I had no idea that this level of competitor analysis was available. It very clearly makes it possible easily to see which new affiliates to recuit, how to improve your SEO and links, where to purchase effective advertising and a whole lot more. Stormpay kills its multi tier affiliate program

Stormpay has changed their referral program from 5 tiers to one tier. This has outraged me and I am sure a lot of other affiliates will not be happy with them either. It seems to me that as soon as I start to earn some reasonable dollars from a multi tier program that they change the rules so they dont have to pay it anymore.

Stormpay is not the first to have done it. Many other merchants have done this before and it seems to be a worrying trend that merchants start with a muti tier program first to get an affiliate and user base then change to a single tier later to avoid having to make large payments to the affiliates who built their business. These tactics are what give merchants a bad name.

Luckily, not all merchants are as bad as Stormpay. One payment processor that maintains its 6 tier affiliate program is AsianPay.

RX MEX has closed

RXmex has closed its pharmacy and affiliate program. They had a great program that paid me very well over the past couple of years, for which I thank them very much.
Luckily, there are plenty of other pharmacy affiliate programs we can join, but the one that looks the best to me is the XLPharmacy Affiliate Program.
They seem to offer everything I need including great service, large product range, competitive prices, excellent 2 tier commissions and lifetime cookies. More details here.

Paypal does not allow 2 tier affiliate programs

PayDotCom has advised up that the Paypal user policy states that "any business in which payouts occur at two or more levels" is prohibited.

I had recently seen that Genbucks which operates a very good 3 tier program had their Paypal account cancelled. But it now seems that 2 tier programs are also in danger of losing their Paypal accounts. There is a huge number of good 2 tier programs using paypal so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Paypal is the biggest payment processor, but there are plenty of others to choose from that do allow 2 tier and multilevel affiliate programs. My suggestion is to have a look at these and open an account now just in case Paypal shuts you down.

StormPay
Has been established almost as long as paypal and covers more countries. Fees can be a little high but generally works well.

Asianpay
They have a very secure system that prevents fraud and is available for the widest range of countries. Fee structure is very competitive.

Adsense and Affiliate programs.

Google's new adsense is creating alot of interest and many publishers have decided to run with them instead of affiliate program banners. This will begin to hurt some affiliate merchants and certainly the affiliate networks will feel the pain.

But will it be the end of affiliate programs? I think not. I do however predict that in the future we may see more affiliate programs that look for closer ties with their affiliates. I would expect merchants to seek out affiliates that are more like real partners rather than just banner publishers. There are more likely to be more affiliate programs that allow for affiliates to use their own branding.

Some affiliate programs that offer your own branding are common in Travel affiliate programs and matchmaking affiliate programs.
